Pressure is mounting for Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids to lead the team up the PSL log standings.

Against Swallows on Thursday afternoon at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, Maritzburg United suffered their 14th loss of the season in the DStv Premiership.

This is the highest number of losses by any team thus far in the current campaign, and they remained etched in 16th position on the log.

The team has won only six from 27 matches, and the club’s head coach Davids is under pressure to improve the situation. He rejoined Maritzburg in November after the club fired John Maduka.

Maduka had been at the helm at Maritzburg for over four months when he got the axe following a string of poor results.

Fadlu Davids joined the club for the second stint after being at the helm during the 2018/19 season and led the team to the highest position ever in the Premiership when they finished in fourth place in the 2017/18 season. He also guided the club to the Nedbank Cup Final, which they lost to Free State Stars.

Since rejoining the Team of Choice after 14 games, Davids has guided the team to four wins, drawing two and losing eight.

MARITZBURG STANCE REVEALED

A source within the club has revealed the club’s stance on the former Orlando Pirates assistant coach. Indications are that management is fully behind the coach, although the disappointing results cause concern.

“The results are a concern for the team, and as the group leader, the head coach is under pressure. The coach has got the support of club management. But in football, the results decide the future and success of coaches.

“To show that they’re backing him, management is already engaging him on next season’s plans whether they get relegated or stay up,” said the source.

Maritzburg United are in grave danger with the relegation axe hovering over their heads. The team’s next league match will be at the Harry Gwala Stadium on May 3 against much-improved side Marumo Gallants.
