Another tough Mother City battle on the cards

Home » Another tough Mother City battle on the cards

Another potentially thrilling battle of the Mother City, Cape Town, is on the cards when Stellenbosch host Cape Town City on Friday evening.

This one promises to keep fans at the edge of their seats as the cross-town rivals clash at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Both sides have excelled in different respects, with Stellenbosch giving a glimmer of their intentions this season after storming into the Carling Knockout Cup.

They have been impressive and are fourth on the DStv Premiership standings after 13 matches.

On the other hand, Cape Town City is riding high as they are second, with 25 points on their tally.

Only five points separate the two going into Friday’s meeting in Stellenbosch. However, their previous meetings have consistently produced some good football, with Steve Barker’s men dominating.

Stellenbosch had the upper hand in their last six meetings, having won four times, while CT City won once.

One match ended in a draw, and their latest meeting on 27 January ended 3-2 in favour of Stellies.

CHIEFS, PIRATES SEEK CONSISTENCY

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will return to action on Saturday afternoon, albeit away to Polokwane City, as their battle for consistency continues.

Amakhosi have blown hot and cold this season, struggling to cope with the coaching changes at the club.

Last time out, they beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 and will hope to garner another win on the trot.

They sit in the eighth position, and any slip-up can leave them in the bottom half of the DStv Premiership table.

With 18 points on their tally, the Chiefs are one point ahead of ninth-placed Polokwane City.

In another match, Orlando Pirates will host TS Galaxy, who recently booked a spot in the final of the Carling Knockout Cup. The game is set for Orlando Stadium at 8pm.

Orlando Pirates are targeting to keep their machine running after a successful mid-week fixture where they beat Moroka Swallows 2-0.

A goal by Evidence Makgopa and a Sipho Sibiya own goal handed the Sea Robbers the all-important win.

And Orlando Pirates mentor Jose Riveiro is pleased with how his players have applied themselves.

“The competition is high. It’s wild sometimes because they are all really good players.

“They all signed for Pirates with the intention to be important players in your [media] eyes and fans. They are all pushing and trying to be on the field,” he said.

Chippa United will host Golden Arrows on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay at 6pm in the other fixtures.

At Harry Gwala stadium, Royal AM is set to host Richards Bay on Sunday.
