How Kaizer Chiefs are dealing with left-back woes

The left-back position has been singled out as one of the problem positions on the current Kaizer Chiefs’ side.

Sifiso Hlanti and Edmilson Dove have taken turns on the left side of Amakhosi’s defence. Reeve Frosler has filled in whenever there was need.

Interestingly, both Hlanti and Dove have their contracts expiring at the end of the season.

Hlanti was handed a one-year deal at the end of last season, while Dove signed a two-year deal at the start of the 2022/23 season.

The Mozambican’s deal, however, has an option for another year.

KAIZER CHIEFS LEFT-BACK PLAN REVEALED

This would be Hlanti’s final year as a Chiefs player unless there’s a huge change. His performances so far have not been convincing.

On the other hand, Dove is set to get another year as a Chiefs player. The club is considering triggering the option for an extension, which would see him spend another year at Naturena.

Chiefs are already searching for a younger left-back who will be touted as a prospect.

The club is reportedly considering several options in that position. They include signing a younger, already established full-back with PSL experience.

There is also the option of signing a full-back from the second tier of South African football.

WHAT ARE KAIZER CHIEFS’ LEFT-BACK OPTIONS?

Chiefs will look for a local option with their foreign spots all filled. Dove, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Jasond Gonzalez, Edson Castillo and Christian Saile are the foreigners in Chiefs’ squad at the moment.

Azola Ntsabo has rejected a new contract offer from Chippa United and will be available to sign a pre-contract in January. The 24-year-old is reportedly eyeing a move to Naturena.

Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien is a name that has reportedly been mentioned in the corridors of Naturena for quite a while. At 26, Basadien could solve the left-back problem. He seems the most likely.

Chiefs and Stellies have done some good business in recent seasons. Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Ashley Du Preez and Zitha Kwinika all came from the Winelands outfit.
