Kaizer Chiefs’ interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has urged Bruce Bvuma to seize the opportunity presented by his recent clean sheet and maintain his position as the team’s number one choice.

Bvuma made his first appearance in the 2023/24 season in the Amakhosi 1-0 win over Moroka Swallows on Sunday in a DStv Premiership clash in Soweto.

It was also Bvuma’s first game in about 15 months, as he has been playing second fiddle to more experienced goalminders Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Petersen.

Khune is reportedly in trouble with the Chiefs management after allegedly arriving at a training session under the influence of alcohol and making unacceptable remarks in the media.

But the club stated that he is injured, while Petersen, who has had a few horrible games this season, was on the bench for the Swallows game.

Kaizer Chiefs player Bruce Bvuma kept a clean sheet

Bvuma’s return to the Chiefs’ starting lineup was marked by an impressive performance as he kept a clean sheet while pulling off decent saves.

Johnson, recognising the goalkeeper’s potential, has called on Bvuma to continue demonstrating his capabilities and solidify his place in the team.

BVUMA’S GOOD DISPLAY PROMPTS JOHNSON TO URGE CONTINUED EFFORT

“Eight games, wow, look, it’s not about Bruce, it’s about the team in front of him,” said Johnson when asked about Kaizer Chiefs keeping its first clean sheet in game eights with Bvuma in between the sticks.

“And yes, we come away with no goals conceded. But I think the whole team has to be congratulated. Yes, he (Bvuma) got a chance. He has to make sure he keeps it, makes sure his head doesn’t go to his body, and he’s able to maintain it because I can say the same thing about Happy Mashiane.

“I can say the same thing about Pony [Nkosingiphile Ngcobo], I can say the same thing about Bibo [Sabelo Radebe], they are young players. I can say the same thing about Shabba [Mduduzi Shabalala], on the bench, in the pitch, doesn’t matter if you are part of the 20, and it’s a credit to all of them.”
