Golden Arrows head coach Mabhuti Khenyeza has revealed the motivation behind the impressive run of his side in the league this season.

The KZN outfit has had an excellent start to the new campaign as they are currently second on the log standings with 20 points after nine games.

They are four points behind the log leaders and the champions Mamelodi Sundowns who have played eight games.

On Saturday, they continued to cruise as they picked their sixth win of the season on Saturday, beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the DStv Premiership.

Khenyeza says they told themselves they wouldn’t be just an “average team” this season. And this has been the turning point for Abafana Bes’thende.

“We just take one game at a time; you know in football, you can’t win all the games,” said Khenyeza.

“Sometimes we will have challenges here and there, but there’s one mission. We told ourselves let’s not be an average team this season.

“We must try and be a competitive team to other teams because you can’t every time be thinking that other people are better than you. What helped us is to focus on ourselves. We’re still going to play other games, and the more we win, others will be motivated, too.

“But we’ll never stop focusing on what we’re focusing on so that we’ll know where we stand when the season ends.”

Khenyeza is now in charge of Arrows as sole head coach after Vusumuzi Vilakazi left the club in September.

‘Kanu’, who started the season with Arrows, went on to join Chippa United as a Technical Director.

Meanwhile, Arrows have played five games under Khenyeza following the departure of Vilakazi. They drew one and won the rest.

Abafana Bes’thende’s next assignment will be a clash against AmaZulu in the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday, 4 November, at 7:00 pm at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
