Bafana Bafana star Njabulo Blom has hailed Lionel Messi’s impact on Major League Soccer (MLS), insisting that the USA top-flight’s is competitive.

Blom, a St. Louis City midfielder, was selected by Bafana coach Hugo Broos as part of the 23-man squad set to play two international matches against Eswatini and Ivory Coast.

Bafana will host Eswatini on Friday at FNB Stadium and Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Abidjan. 

Njabulo Blom, coached by former Bafana defender Bradley Carnell, has impressed for St. Louis this season, making 25 appearances and scoring one goal.

However, the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder believes the Messi impact has been felt and influential in the MLS. Messi joined Inter Miami in July this year from Paris Saint-Germain [PSG].

Addressing the media at a Bafana training session at the University of Pretoria on Monday, Blom said: “We all know that Messi is one of the best in the world,” said Blom. 

“We knew that when he moved to the MLS, the league would get much attention and sponsors. 

“So, I think it’s been great having him because now the league is known and being noticed worldwide and taken seriously.”

In addition, Blom believes that the MLS is a highly competitive league.

“There are a lot of people who say the league in the US is not competitive, but you will only see it when you are there,” he added.

“I have been there for a year, and it is a competitive league. A lot of players from Europe and South America are coming into the league, and that has helped make it better.

“For me, moving to the US is about using it as a stepping stone to better leagues in Europe and grow as a person. You can use it as a stepping stone, especially when you are from Africa. It is a good league and a good environment.”
