Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has reiterated his desire to see more South African players playing abroad, believing that it will help to improve the quality of the national team.

“It’s very important that you have players playing abroad because, and maybe some people will be angry again, I think that competitions there are higher level than PSL for the moment,” Broos told journalists.

Broos also believes that having more South African players abroad will help to raise the profile of the country’s football.

“When you play against good opponents and strong opponents you become better. Foster became a better player since moving to Burnley.

“He becomes a better player because every day he’s playing with players who are better. And he’s playing games against teams who are better.

“So, this is very important that you have players abroad without forgetting those who are here, but it gives you something extra.”

Broos’s comments are echoed by many South African football fans, who believe that the country needs to produce more overseas-based players in order to compete with the best teams in Africa and the world.

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of South African players moving abroad to play in Europe. Some of the most notable examples include Njabulo Blom, who plays for St Louis, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who plays for Minnesota United in the MLS, and Lyle Foster, who plays for Burnley in the English Premier League.

However, there is still a long way to go before South Africa can match the number of overseas-based players produced by other African countries such as Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast.

If Broos’s wish is granted, and more South African players start to play abroad, it could have a major impact on the fortunes of the Bafana Bafana national team.
