Retired Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has voiced his unhappiness on Amakhosi’s lengthy slump, revealing the type of coach that his former club should have brought in.

Khanye described Chiefs’ style of play in recent years as a ‘disaster’, stating that the Soweto giants lack the drive and ambition to succeed.

With Mamelodi Sundowns continuing to dominate the SA football scenes and Orlando Pirates slowly rising to the occasion, Chiefs extended their trophy draught to eight seasons.

In the past campaign, Sundowns won their sixth straight title league and reached the CAF Champions League semi-finals. On the other side, Pirates won a Cup double; the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

With that said, Chiefs finished fifth on the DStv Premiership log standings, failing to qualify for the CAF interclub competitions. As a result, the club opted to demote head coach Arthur Zwane to his old assistant coach position and appointed Molefi Ntseki to take over.

However, Khanye believes Chiefs should have hired a coach with an understanding of the SA football culture like Pitso Mosimane.

Mosimane was in the job market after parting ways with Saudi Arabia side Al-Ahli. Mosimane, SA’s most decorated coaching export, stated that Chiefs had never approached him before he initially penned a deal with Wahda FC in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Pro League.

“I don’t understand why Chiefs didn’t go for Pitso Mosimane. Yes, he is experienced, but they can afford him. They’ve got the money,” Khanye told SoccerNews24.

“He is the most successful coach that South Africa has produced. If Chiefs really wanted to return back to their glory days, why did they not even approach Pitso? Or Nasreddine Nabi, who has better credentials than Ntseki. I don’t know much about Nabi, but he reached the CAF Confederation Cup final. I would have given him the benefit of the doubt because he changed Yanga in two seasons.

“Maybe he was going to struggle in his first season, but he was likely going to win a trophy in his second, and you would see the direction of the club, but I would have taken Pitso,

Khanye explained why he believes Mosimane, with three CAF Champions League titles to his name, would be a perfect fit for Chiefs.

“Coach Pitso is the right person for them; he knows SA players, the culture of SA football, how players should play,” added the ex-Chiefs dribbling wizard.

“And he has signed players based on his philosophy; he fixed Sundowns and signed quality players, not just ordinary players.

The club needed to hire Pitso as he understands South African football. They were supposed to bring in Pitso and Farouk Khan as head of development; Farouk produced many players like myself, Itumeleneg Khune and  Jabu Pule [Mahlangu].”
