Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of Richards Bay FC defender Sibangani Zulu as the Soweto giants continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Buccaneers have moved aggressively in the transfer market following a memorable campaign that saw them secure a domestic treble, lifting the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup and Betway Premiership title. Their league triumph ended a 14-year wait for domestic supremacy and has heightened expectations for the season ahead.

Soccer News 24 understands that Zulu has successfully completed all necessary processes related to his move following medical assessments last week. The talented centre-back is set to become one of the club’s key defensive additions as they prepare for another demanding campaign that includes participation in the CAF Champions League.

The 24-year-old defender joined Richards Bay in April last year following the expulsion of Royal AM from the Premier Soccer League. He quickly established himself as an important member of the Natal Rich Boyz squad, making 27 appearances across all competitions and contributing one assist.

His consistent performances and defensive maturity attracted interest from several clubs, but Pirates have won the race for his signature as they look to add depth and quality to their backline.

Zulu’s arrival forms part of a broader recruitment drive at Pirates, who are determined to compete strongly both domestically and on the continent.

The club is also closing in on Stellenbosch FC midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane. Sources have indicated that the highly-rated midfielder completed his medical examinations last week and is in the final stages of finalising his switch to the Buccaneers.

Mthiyane enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Betway Premiership after joining Stellenbosch from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford FC. The midfielder featured in 38 matches across all competitions and scored one goal, becoming a regular figure in Steve Barker’s side.

His performances helped Stellenbosch remain competitive across multiple competitions and earned him recognition as one of the most promising midfielders in the league.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AMBITIONS DRIVING RECRUITMENT

Pirates’ transfer activity comes as the club seeks to build a squad capable of challenging for honours on multiple fronts. Having secured qualification for the CAF Champions League, the Buccaneers are eager to make a deeper run in Africa’s premier club competition.

The recent continental success of Mamelodi Sundowns, who lifted the CAF Champions League trophy, has further intensified the desire among Pirates’ hierarchy to assemble a squad capable of competing with the continent’s elite.

With Zulu already secured and Mthiyane’s move expected to be concluded soon, Pirates appear determined to ensure they have the depth and quality required for what promises to be another demanding season.
