Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi remains tight-lipped about his official role at the club, expressing his disinterest in titles.

Sundowns parted ways with head coach Rulani Mokwena and are yet to announce his replacement. Mngqithi, who worked under Mokwena, has been in charge of the club’s preseason.

It, however, remains unclear what his position is at the club. Asked about his title, the veteran mentor shared his thoughts about titles.

“Positions are not the most important thing. In my opinion, a position is the lowest point of leadership,” he told journalists.

Despite this, he’s actively leading training sessions as the team prepares for their upcoming MTN8 quarter-final match.

“I don’t know, I don’t know… The question is right, but you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know guys, but I can advise you to say ‘Coach Manqoba.'”

He elaborated on his views on leadership, emphasising the importance of influence over titles. “We must move away from this obsession of positions guys. This is killing our country in many ways… What is more important is your level of influence in everything you do,” he said.

He further highlighted his belief in the value of personal qualities over formal designations, asserting that true leadership comes from earning the “permission to lead” through qualities like intellectual capacity, selflessness, and class worthiness.

While Mngqithi’s official title remains undefined, his focus on leading the team remains steadfast. Sundowns, who finished as runners-up in the previous top 8 competition, will be aiming for victory this time around under his guidance.

Mamelodi Sundowns start off with a clash against Polokwane City on Sunday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The defending Betway Premiership champions have added Romain Folz to their technical team following Mokwena’s exit. The Frenchman previously coach Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu before taking up a job at FIFA.
