South Africa’s star Thembi Kgatlana has made history with a record-breaking move to Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil and her contract details at the new club have been revealed.

Kgatlana parted ways with USA side Racing Louisville to pen a deal with Mexican club Tigres UANL Femenil, in a record deal. Both clubs announced the transfer of Kgatlana on Wednesday with Racing Louisville describing it as a “six-figure transfer”.

According to Kgatlana’s former club, the transfer fee is “the second-highest in National Women’s Soccer League history for a player departing the league for a foreign club”. The Banyana Banyana’s star blockbuster move to Tigres UANL it’s also the biggest ever for Racing Kgatlana’s previous club and the agreement between the two clubs includes a sell-on clause.

There is also a an add-on to the transfer fee for Racing should Kgatlana score a certain number of goals for Tigres.

According to reports, the transfer of Kgatlana will see Tigers pay $275,000 [R5 million] to Racing. In addition, Kgatlana, will take home $550,000 [R10 million] annually for the duration of her three-year contract with Tigers. Racing on the other hand are set to pocket $25,000 [R46000] the 2018 CAF Women’s Player of the Year scores 20 goals or more in Mexico.

“While my time at Racing Louisville was short-lived, I am truly thankful to the fans and the people of Louisville for their support,” Kgatlana said.

“The affection and experience I received at the club will always be a big part of my life and career. I am sure we will cross paths again in the future.” In addition Racing general manager Ryan Dell said: “We want to wish Thembi all the best as she takes on a new challenge in Mexico.

“Naturally we are disappointed to lose such a talented player who is a great presence in our locker room, but we had extensive discussions with Thembi and completely respected her desire for this move. This is a life-changing opportunity for her and her family.”
