Traiblazing Mamelodi Sundowns set a new record as they reclaimed their place at the summit of the DStv Premiership standings after a convincing win over SuperSport on Wednesday evening.

Mamelodi Sundowns set a new record after garnering a record of nine consecutive wins since the season started.

Simply put, the Rulani Mokwena-coached side becomes the first team to achieve such an impressive record in the PSL era. 

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs previously held the record, with their eight match winning streak during the 2014/15 season.

Sundowns are unstoppable new record

In this one, Masandawana beat SuperSport United 2-0 in what turned out to be pulsating Tshwane derby. 

Peter Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored the goals that Sundowns needed to win in the last 15 minutss of the first half.

They therefore dislodged Cape Town City who had assumed pole position after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Golden Arrows on Sunday.

The Citizens led by a one point margin, with 25 points on their tally. However their stay at the top only lasted for three days, as Sundowns clawed back to the summit, rising to 27 points after the win.

The Rulani Mokwena-coached side were coming from another convincing win over FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania in the CAF Champions League group phase.

Mokwena will hope his men carry the scintillating form going into Sunday’s away fixture to TP Mazembe in the DR Congo.

Against SuperSport United, they dominated from the onset as they also restricted their opponents from carving out clean balls to their strikers.

Gavin Hunt’s men tried hard to come back in the second half but Masandawana were resolute in defense.
