Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that their star player, Themba Zwane, is recovering well from the injury he sustained against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

The talisman suffered a deep cut above his right eye after a clash with Yusuf Maart. This was in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final against Chiefs last Saturday.

Sundowns scored a stoppage-time equaliser through Khuliso Mudau as the game ended 1-0. Edson Castillo had opened the scoring early in the second half.

On Monday, the Tshwane giants released a statement to give an update on Zwane’s injury.

The 34-year-old has featured in eight games in all competitions in the new season. He has a goal and an assist to his name.

“In Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first leg, Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye,” read the club’s statement.

“He received immediate medical attention field and was stabilised at the stadium. Zwane was later sent to hospital for further observation and a precautionary scan in terms of concussion protocols.”

“The good news is that he is well and resting at home under the supervision of the club’s medical department.”

The update rules out Zwane for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming friendly matches against Namibia and the DRC. Both clashes will be staged at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Bafana will take on the Brave Warriors on September 09 and the Leopards three days later.

Zwane, who was part of the 23-man squad, has been replaced by Chiefs attacker Pule Mmodi.

After the Chiefs game, Mokwena highlighted that Zwane’s injury was a big blow. He insisted that the attacker needs some rest.

“Mshishi [Themba Zwane], I sit here and ask myself how important he is. He’s so important, especially for two reasons: how we want to play and because he’s the captain,” said Mokwena.

“Losing him was a big blow. We are literally down in the attacking department with the strikers. We have to make do with what we have. Mshishi was playing in a nine-10 position; we don’t have [Abubeker] Nassir, we don’t have Thapelo Maseko, so you can understand what it does.”
