The story of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss is one of unlikely beginnings and unwavering determination. From the streets of Chesterville, a township in Durban, to the grand stage of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Goss’ journey is a testament to his talent, resilience, and passion for football.

His path was not always clear-cut. Initially a striker, Goss discovered his calling as a goalkeeper by chance, teaching a family member the basics while donning winter gloves. But it was clear that he had a natural aptitude for the position. His reflexes, agility, and fearlessness quickly caught the eye of local coaches.

“I wouldn’t say I knew from the start that I was going to be a goalkeeper,” says the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper. “Growing up, I played as a striker. I started as a goalkeeper for Chesterville, where I grew up, teaching a family member how to be a goalkeeper while playing as a striker. I used winter gloves at that time.”

Brian Baloyi, the ‘Spiderman,’ was a significant inspiration, influencing not only Goss’s playing style but also his fashion choices. “I admired his style so much that I wanted to grow dreadlocks like him,” Goss shares. Iker Casillas, known for his exceptional game reading, also shaped Goss’s approach.

The KZN-born star navigated injuries and lack of game time, demonstrating a resilience that would become a hallmark of his career. His breakthrough came with a loan to SuperSport United, where he proved his worth and earned a spot on the national team.

“I’ve faced two significant challenges. The first was a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Overcoming it was tough because I initially feared re-injury when I returned to the pitch. The second challenge was the lack of game time at Sundowns, which I addressed through a loan deal with SuperSport United.”

Two particularly memorable moments are making the CAF Team of the Week while at Sundowns and receiving a bronze medal at AFCON. The AFCON stage was a dream come true for the former Bidvest Wits goalie. Representing his country was an honour he cherished, a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. He embraced the pressure, relishing the opportunity to showcase his talents globally.

The 30-year-old’s story is not just about football. It’s about a young man from a humble background who dared to dream big and achieved his goals through perseverance and hard work. He inspires aspiring athletes across South Africa, symbolising what can be achieved with passion and determination.

Maintaining peak physical condition is crucial for Goss. He adheres to a strict training regimen and emphasises the importance of diet for recovery. “I don’t eat in the mornings; I only have lunch and dinner,” he reveals. Mental preparation involves analysing opponents, visualising the game, and maintaining a consistent approach regardless of the rival.

During the season, Goss prioritises his career and fitness while based in Johannesburg. The off-season allows him to return home to KZN and spend quality time with his family.

Beyond football, Goss enjoys reading, hiking, and go-karting with his family. He also has ambitious goals for the future, including uplifting the next generation through his foundation. “I want to empower young people in Chesterville to pursue various professions, not just football,” he explains.

The journey from Chesterville to AFCON is a testament to Ricardo Goss’s unwavering spirit. His story reminds us that with talent, hard work, and a belief in oneself, anything is possible.
