Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana’s future with the club hangs in the balance due to a contract impasse.
Kekana’s agent, Steve Kapeluschnik, revealed that Mamelodi Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg’s initial offer of a two-year extension with no salary increase was rejected.
“Kekana was not asking for a lot,” Kapeluschnik stated. “He said, ‘I have done well here, proved myself, played for Bafana, I am the defender of the season, show that you appreciate,’ but the Sporting Director is not bothered.”
Berg’s subsequent offer of a one-year contract with no option or salary increase has reportedly left Grant Kekana “fuming.” A source close to the situation revealed that Kekana feels undervalued compared to some of the club’s recent signings.

“This guy (Flemming Berg) brought in South Americans who are earning a million a month, and the players you are talking about like Grant are contributing every week, but they cannot even make half what guys like Marcelo Allende and Matias Esquivel are making,” the source said.
While another round of talks is expected, Kaizer Chiefs is reportedly an option if Sundowns fails to improve their offer.
“Kekana does not want to leave, but he knows Chiefs can offer better terms,” the source added.
The departure of Rhulani Mokwena, who shares an agent with Kekana, further complicates the negotiations.
