AmaZulu FC has quelled rumours of a potential transfer for goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, choosing instead to extend the veteran shot-stopper’s contract for another season. The Durban-based club triggered a one-year extension in Mothwa’s contract, as first reported by SABC Sport, ensuring the 33-year-old’s continued presence between the sticks for the upcoming season.

This decision comes as a relief to Usuthu fans, who were concerned about losing their reliable last line of defence to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, both of whom had reportedly shown interest in the experienced keeper.

Mothwa, who initially joined AmaZulu from Chippa United in November 2020, had faced a temporary setback in his starting position, going seven games without a start. However, he showcased his resilience and experience by returning to the starting lineup for the final 11 matches of the DStv Premiership, where his stellar performances proved crucial in the team’s fight against relegation.

The goalkeeper’s consistent displays throughout the season did not go unnoticed, as he earned a place in the 24-man squad for the AFCON earlier this year and continued to feature in recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers under national team coach Hugo Broos.

For Mothwa, this contract extension represents a vote of confidence in his abilities and the club’s future. It provides him with a platform to potentially earn more national team call-ups and contribute to the club’s success in the upcoming season.

As the new season approaches, Mothwa will be looking to pick up where he left off, solidifying his position as a dependable goalkeeper for both club and country. His continued presence in the Bafana Bafana squad further underscores his value as a reliable backup option to Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss.
