Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs kept their momentum in the DStv Premiership after picking crucial wins over the weekend.

While Orlando Pirates beat TS Galaxy on Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs beat Polokwane City on the same day.

For the Buccaneers, Deon Hotto was the hero after scoring a first-half strike that turned out to be enough to earn them maximum points.

Although it was a dull fixture, Orlando Pirates are walking with springs on their step after recording a second successive win.

The Sea Robbers have been so perfect as they are yet to concede in the last five games, where they won four times and drew once.

As a result, they now sit on fifth position on the log standings with 22 points on their tally.

On the other hand, Pule Mmodi’s 51st minute goal helped Amakhosi secure maximum points after a nail-biting encounter against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

This was their sixth win in the current DStv Premiership season and it took them to sixth position on the log with 20 points.

And they remain 10 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have four games in hand.

Cavin Johnson and his men were lucky to survive thanks to Bruce Bvuma who repelled good efforts from the likes of Oswin Appollis and Douglas Mapfumo.

CAVIN JOHNSON HAPPY WITH HIS CHIEFS

And Johnson is excited with their current form: “I think we’re just doing a great job, we need 15 wins, then we can talk. In some moments yes, I think we’re getting there.

“But like if it was the same win with the other game against Swallows, then we can say we’re building on the type of play we have or the type of play we want to have going forward.

“But when you have to play against a team like this, it’s a whole new perspective. We also to also go back home and say how do we play against a team that plays like this.

“This is because there could be one or two teams that play similarly, play the long ball and on the second ball. So, we need to be able to do that but we also need to make sure that we’re able to keep on stitching the Kaizer Chiefs club,” he said.

CHIPPA UNITED PICK VITAL WIN

In another match, Chippa United delivered an outstanding performance to secure a 2-0 win over Golden Arrows on Saturday evening.

In an impressive match, their hard work finally paid off in the 18th minute when Ronaldo Maarman scored a superb free-kick.

Chippa kept pressure and it paid dividends in the referee’s optional time when Craig Martin scored from close range to seal the deal to secure maximum points.

On Friday, Stellenbosch ended Cape Town City‘s six-match win streak with a 1-0 win in their DStv Premiership clash in the Winelands on Friday night.

They got their breakthrough in the 39th minute, with Stellies’ Devon Titus providing the assist for Ivorian Anicet Ouras, who needed just one powerful touch to beat Darren Keet.

Meanwhile Royal AM rubbed more salt onto Richards Bay’s wounds after edging them in a five goal thriller. They won 3-2.
