Chippa United head coach Morgan Mammila has hit back at critics following the club’s recent slump in form, attributing the team’s struggles to luck eluding them.
Mammila’s comments come after a six-match winless streak for Chippa, placing the club in a precarious position in the league table. Despite the pressure, Mammila remains defiant, pointing to his own record and the performance of other teams in the league.
The Chilli Boys are in 13th place after picking three wins, six draws and four losses.
“It bothers any coach who doesn’t win any matches,” Mammila said. “Although I’ve lost the same amount as Cape Town City [this was before City lost their fifth league match], the only difference is they’ve won more. There were only two matches I felt we lost completely, against Sekhukhune [United] and [Mamelodi] Sundowns. The rest was pure luck, where we were denied clear wins.”

The coach went on to emphasise the role of luck in football. “Football is about luck. Luck is not on our side right now. Just a matter of that one win, it takes us to the top eight position.”
“My job speaks for itself; nobody can be fired for losing four matches. There’s a coach who hasn’t won a match, and nobody is talking about him. Everyone finds it easy [to criticise] when it comes to me. If I were a certain race, they would not be saying all these things.”

With the club facing a crucial period in the season, Mammila will be under increasing pressure to turn the team’s fortunes around. Whether he can silence his critics and lead Chippa back to winning ways remains to be seen.
On Saturday, the Chilli Boys play host to Golden Arrows at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Kick off is 17h45.
