Bafana have a golden opportunity of ending the first round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on top of Group C when they face Rwanda on Wednesday.

Rwanda will host Bafana at the Huye Stadium, where neighbour Zimbabwe hosted Nigeria on Sunday.

Bafana are the only Group C team that has collected maximum points in the matches.

They beat Benin 2-1 in their first match played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, courtesy of Percy Tau and Khuliso Mudau scoring goals.

Their opponents in the group settled for draws, with giants Nigeria first sharing spoils with Lesotho after a 1-1 stalemate.

The Super Eagles went on to be held to another 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe on Sunday at the Huye stadium.

Zimbabwe drew 0-0 with Rwanda in their first match, leaving Bafana with a big advantage of extending their lead.

Bafana Bafana line up

So far, Bafana sits pretty on top of the group with 3 points, while Nigeria and Zimbabwe have two points apiece.

Lesotho have a point, while Benin have nothing to show off, having been humbled by Hugo Broos’ men.

The two nations, Lesotho and Benin, are due to clash on Tuesday. Any result between them will matter less if Hugo Broos and his men pick another win.

A win over Rwanda will put them in the driving seat going to the second round pencilled for June 2024, where they will face Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

Rwanda’s current poor record will probably give Bafana confidence going into this one.

Rwanda has yet to register a win in their last five matches, where they lost to Benin and Mozambique.

The Amavumbi picked three draws against Benin, Senegal and most recently Zimbabwe.

Broos will need his men to be at their penetrative best, considering that Rwanda is more defensive.
