Rulani Mokwena has shed light on the mental anguish of Bongani Zungu after the midfielder broke Bernard Parker’s leg.

The unfortunate incident occurred last Wednesday at Mbombela Stadium, where the Sundowns star Zungu clattered into TS Galaxy attacker Parker in a nasty challenge that looked worse with each replay.

Zungu’s tackle left Parker with a broken leg as Galaxy beat Sundowns on penalties to advance to the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals.

A week later, Mokwena revealed that Zungu, who was sent off for the challenge, is struggling to cope with the guilt of causing Parker’s career-ending injury.

However, Parker has since been discharged from hospital after a successful surgery, with Mokwena insisting that his player Zungu felt remorse for his actions.

He also reiterated that there was no malice in Zungu’s challenge against the former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs attacker, Parker.

“I do know for a fact (that Zungu is affected mentally),” said Rulani on Metro FM. “I’ve had a discussion with Bongani Zungu, and I have seen him throughout the week how dejected he is and really how it has affected him.

“I know 100 per cent that he is not a malicious person, and he is not a player that would go out to intentionally harm and maybe even compromise the career of another footballer.

“So I know how Bongz has felt. And I know that Bongs has done his best to reach out to Bernard, even to the point where I have instructed him, especially during this break.

“Because we had a very difficult schedule where we went to Mbombela and from there we travelled the next day, and I haven’t spoken to him because today (Wednesday) we have a day off, but my instruction has been to him to try to go and pay a visit and try to extend his well wishes but also to express his remorse.”
