Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana enjoyed yet another runout for Romanian club Steaua Bucharest, commonly known as FCSB, as the club consolidated its spot at the summit of the Romanian Premier League (Liga 1).

FCSB won 5-2 against Sepsi OSK on Sunday night to open a five point gap between themselves and their nearest challenger, CFR Cluj, having played a game more. The club is searching for a first league title since 2015.

Ngezana was in the starting line up and played a full 90 minute spell. This was the player’s fourth involvement in the last five league games. His run of games includes three starts in the last four matches.

The 26 year old defender helped FCSB keep two successive clean sheets in his first two starts against CS U Craiova and FCV Farul as they won 3-0 and 1-0 respectively. He was then benched for the 2-2 draw against FC Hermannstadt before being reinstated for the Sunday game.

POTENTIALLY ENDING A TITLE DROUGHT

FCSB has started the season with a clear motive of challenging for the league title. The club is Romania’s most successful team with 26 league titles to its name, however, they have not won the league for eight years. Their last league triumph in the 2014-2015 was a special one as the club had secured a third successive league triumph stretching backfrom the 2012-2013 season.

The club has finished in the second spot in five of the last six seasons. Winning the league would not only end a title drought it would also offer the club a route to the prestigious UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
