Orlando Pirates have rekindled their interest in Stellenbosch FC midfield maestro Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
The gritty defensive midfielder has continued to impress with his performances in his third season at the Winelands outfit.
Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s name is again being mentioned among potential transfer targets for Pirates. The player has been linked with the club for some time.Â
According to a source close to Pirates camp, the technical team has recommended the midfielder to the head coach, Jose Riveiro. The club is analysing the player, and now it is up to Riveiro to give them the green light.Â
PIRATES ON THE LOOKOUT FOR NEW MIDFIELDER
Orlando Pirates are known to be looking for a new defensive midfielder, especially given the age of their four defensive midfielders, Ben Motswari, Miguel Timm, Thabang Monare and Makhehleni Makhaula.Â
The midfielder has been linked with an exit from Stellies for some time. Both AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs were looking to bring him on board despite the interest from the Sea Robbers.
Pirates are still keen to land the player signature. However, it seems they will get stiff competition from other PSL teams.Â
Mthethwa has been outstanding in the Stellenbosch FC midfield, and he has produced a handful of man-of-the-match performances since joining Steve Barker’s coached side. He has participated in most of the PSL matches in the 2022 /23 campaign, making 29 appearances across their 30 fixtures.Â

Mthethwa’s performance has paved the way for the Bafana Bafana set-up under coach Hugo Broos.
Ox, as Mthethwa is known in the football fraternity, is contracted to Stellebosch until June 30, 2024, having signed a two-and-a-half-year contract when he joined from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Black Leopards in January last year.
The Cape Winelands club lost some key players to Gauteng clubs, including Ashley Du Preez, Zitha Nkwinika, Vusi Sibiya and Junior Mendieta. It remains to be seen if Mthethwa will be the latest player to be sold.
