DStv Premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have reignited interest in Khanyisa Mayo and made a new, improved offer to Cape Town City.

Citizens chairman John Comitis confirmed that Mayo will remain with the Mother City-based club after rejecting Sundowns’ first offer.

However, an SN24 source close to the Chloorkop-based club has revealed that the Brazilians have approached City with a fresh offer. They hope to secure the former Richards Bay player’s signature before the transfer window closes.

Mayo was in scintillating form last season for City, scoring 13 goals and providing three assists in all competitions. His exploits helped the Cape Town outfit finish fourth position on the DStv Premiership log standings.

The left-footed attacker form saw him receive a call-up to Bafana Bafana during the 2022/23 campaign. He also finished as a joint top goal scorer in the DStv Premiership with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile.

The 25-year-old also won the Cape Town City Player of the Season award.

WHY SUNDOWNS ARE REIGNITING INTEREST IN KHANYISA MAYO

Mamwlodi Sundowns have struggled to get goals since Shalulile was injured in the 4-0 victory over Golden Arrows. Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir is still making his way back from injury.

The former SuperSport United Academy product, Mayo, has been on the wanted list of several DStv Premiership clubs.

Mayo has not enjoyed the best of starts to the 2023/24 campaign with no goals scored but has continued to attract interest from the Tshwane giants.

City announced that he signed a new long-term contract with the club before the 2023/24 campaign. He is contracted with the club until June 2028.

It remains to be seen whether City will accept Sundowns’ new bid for Mayo before the transfer window closes.

If not, the Bafana Bafana international will remain with the Eric Tinkler-coached side.
