Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has sent out a stern warning to his side’s rivals, stating that the Tshwane giants are yet to hit top gear.

Rulani Mokwena believes Sundowns are just getting started, having won each of their five encounters in the new season in all competitions so far.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who won their sixth DStv Premiership title in a row last season, are at the summit of the log standings in the new campaign. They are on 12 points after four games, five points ahead of second-placed SuperSport United.

Mokwena’s men are in the semi-finals of the MTN8. They meet Kaizer Chiefs, a team they have already beaten in the league this season.

In their most recent game in the league on Saturday, Sundowns beat Chippa United 2-0 in Gqeberha. Aubrey Modiba was on the scoresheet, and Justice Chabalala of Chippa scored an own goal.

Mokwena said Downs aren’t yet at their best as they eye all domestic trophies and the CAF Champions League

“We’re moving with every game. We’re getting closer, and once we get minutes in the legs, we’ll be better,” said Mokwena.

“It was a good performance [against Chippa]. We played well, considering we have so many games at the moment, and we don’t get any training time.

“There is a lot of regeneration and video analysis; that’s why I am very proud of the players because it is not easy to do what they are doing.  We have a target on our back, everybody wants to beat us, and it is difficult to be us, but they say, ‘heavy is the head that carries the crown’.”

“We talk a lot to the players. They probably get tired of me, but we talk a lot. I also have a lot of help from the technical team because they also talk a lot with them during individual meetings,” added Mokwena.
