Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has explained the reasons behind the decision to rope in Helmy Gueldich as the club’s new Conditioning coach.
Riveiro said that the appointment of Gueldich is part of Pirates’ progressive approach as they want to continue growing and winning trophies.
The Soweto giants won two trophies in Riveiro’s first season in SA [2022/23 campaign]: the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.
Helmy Gueldich joins Pirates in season, where they are set to play in competitions this season, including the CAF Champions League.
According to the club, “the demanding schedule makes it imperative that the players remain consistently available for selection.” That’s where Gueldich, formerly with Tanzanian giants Yanga FC.
Gueldich, a PhD holder in Exercise Science, was the man responsible for Yanga players’ incredible fitness levels as they reached the CAF Confederation Cup final last season, where they lost to USM Alger.
In addition, the Tunisian coach Helmy Gueldich was part of the Yanga technical team that led the club to back-to-back domestic trebles with Nasreddine Nabi at the helm.
RIVEIRO ON GUEDICH’S APPOINTMENT AT PIRATES
“The club is looking for improvement in every area and in areas that you know and areas that you don’t know,” said Riveiro. “So that’s normal [the appointment of new conditioning coach].
“We are part of a club that is looking to permanently develop. We all know the reason why we are there: it’s to help the players become better, help the team be better and make sure the history of the club improves season after season.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Pirates stated that “Gueldich is not only a seasoned professional but also a former player, holding a PhD in Exercise Science. His wealth of knowledge and background will be a valuable asset to the team.”
