With Erik ten Hag’s future hanging in the balance at Manchester United, his striker’s coach Benni McCarthy has seemingly set his sights on a managerial post elsewhere.
Reports suggest there could be a change at Manchester United’s helm. New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly considering replacing Ten Hag with Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.
The former Ajax manager enjoyed a successful first season at Manchester United in the 2022/23 campaign. Under his guidance, the Red Devils reached the FA Cup final, clinched the League Cup, and secured a coveted top-four spot in the Premier League.
This season has been a disappointment for the Red Devils. They finished last in their Champions League group and haven’t been able to compete for a top-four spot in the Premier League.
While Manchester United earned a win against Everton, their performance wasn’t entirely convincing. They allowed Everton 23 shots on goal, leaving Sean Dyche’s team feeling they could have snatched a point from Old Trafford.
That uninspiring performance came on the back of back-to-back defeats against Fulham and crosstown rivals Manchester City.
WHAT BENNI MCCARTHY HAS SAID ABOUT HIS FUTURE
McCarthy has set his sights on a future as a first-team manager following two seasons at Old Trafford.
The 46-year-old South African has enjoyed working alongside United attackers like Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund during his tenure. McCarthy, a popular figure among players, staff, and supporters alike, faces an uncertain future due to ongoing speculation about the manager’s position.
With Ten Hag’s future unclear, McCarthy has acknowledged he’s considering his own managerial aspirations after a positive stint at United.
