Nigeria legend Jay-Jay Okocha has thrown his weight behind South African coach Pitso Mosimane for the Super Eagles head coach position.

Mosimane, who is unattached, has been once again linked with Nigeria as current head coach, Jose Peseiro. He finds himself in a precarious position after a disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Two unexpected draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe have ignited a firestorm of criticism. Those results cast doubt on Peseiro’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to success.

Nigeria are in group C in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers along with Bafana Bafana, whom Mosimane once coached.

And while there is no official confirmation of Mosimane’s interest in the Super Eagles job, the coach’s past comments indicate his eagerness to return to the international stage.

Mosimane has made it clear that he wants to coach an African national team ahead of 2026. The three-time CAF Champions League winner wants to guide a team at the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026.

This ambition is fuelled by his long-held dream of conquering the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

At an event in Johannesburg on Thursday celebrating 60 years of the Bundesliga, Jay-Jay Okocha, a former Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder, praised Mosimane.

Okocha declared Pitso Mosimane, who recently left after parting ways with UEA Pro League side Al Wahda, “one of the best coaches on the continent.”

“I think Pitso is without any doubt one of the best African coaches. His track record is there for everyone to be seen,” said Okocha.

“If we (Nigeria) can get a coach like that, he’d add great value to our football. A coach that has a lot of experience at home in Africa.

“I don’t know how true that is (the rumours), but of course, a coach like that is most welcome.”
