Orlando Pirates are set to tie down promising young defender Thabiso Monyane to a new long-term contract.

The 23-year-old’s current deal is due to expire in June 2024, but the club have moved swiftly to secure his future with a  proposed new three-year contract.

Monyane has been a key player for Pirates in recent seasons, making over 50 appearances for the club. He has impressed with his pace, strength, and versatility and is seen as a key part of the club’s future.

If agreed upon, the new deal will keep Monyane at Pirates until 2027. He is expected to play an even more important role in the team in the coming seasons.

“He’s very happy to be signing a new contract with Orlando Pirates,” a source said. “He has been at the club since he was a boy with the likes of Lyle Foster. He’s happy to continue representing this great club.”

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has always preferred Monyane at right-back ahead of Bandile Shandu. He has made 17 appearances this season across all competitions. The bulk of those appearances came from the DStv Premiership, where he has featured nine times for the Buccaneers.

In the MTN8, which Pirates won last month, Monyane made three appearances. He featured four times in the CAF Champions League. His other appearance came in the Carling Knockout Cup, underlining his importance to Riveiro’s plans.
