Kaizer Chiefs are set to hold contract renewal talks with goalkeeper Brandon Petersen despite his poor start to the season.

Petersen is about to enter the final year of his three-year deal at Naturena, having joined the club back in 2021. Should the club fail to renew his contract before January, they could lose him on a free transfer.

However, indications are that the club will begin the talks during the current FIFA break as they intend to keep the 29-year-old goalie.

Petersen has been competing with veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune for the number one spot. He was the preferred choice of coach Molefi Ntseki, who has since left the club.

WHY PETERSEN IS GETTING A NEW DEAL

The former Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper has featured in 11 games this season. He has conceded 10 goals, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

Petersen is currently out nursing an injury and will look to wrest the number one jersey from Khune when he returns to action. Amakhosi have made it clear Khune will not continue playing after the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Khune was handed a one year deal that comes to an end when the curtain comes down on the 2023/24 term. It means the club will go into the market to search for his replacement. For continuity’s sake, Petersen will stay on at the club should they agree on his new deal.

The new contract talks between Kaizer Chiefs and Brandon Petersen could drag on for some time. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops and whether Petersen will be staying at Naturena beyond the end of the current season.

Indications are that the club is looking to table a two-year deal with an option for a further year.

This long-term commitment guarantees stability at the goalkeeper position, highlighting the club’s ambition to rebuild their squad and pursue domestic and continental glory.
