Former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson says he is working around the clock to make Kaizer Chiefs tick but wouldn’t say whether he is willing to be the team’s substantive coach.
Johnson landed on the Kaizer Chiefs hotseat last month when Molefi Ntseki was fired for inconsistent results since the 2023/24 season started.
The 64-year-old, joined the Soweto giants in September when he was appointed as the head of academy at Kaizer Chiefs, a portfolio that includes full oversight of the Club’s youth academy and scouting network.
Interestingly, he finds himself in-charge of the senior team, albeit on an interim basis, as the club searches for a lasting solution to their problem since Ntseki’s departure.
JOHNSON COY ABOUT BEING CHIEFS’ SUBSTANTIVE HEAD COACH
Asked if he is geared to take up the job as the substantive head coach, the soft spoken Cavin Johnson said ‘there’s something bigger’. “It’s something that appeals to me as decent but there is something bigger that appears to me at Kaizer Chiefs.
“I’ve been to some of the biggest teams in the world and I have worked with some of the biggest clubs in the world.
“And when I say, this team has got that potential, then I think you need to bring from a bigger club and put in this team, but not as a head coach.

“The head coach will only be changed. At the moment, the team is not where it’s supposed to be. I think this team can be as big as it should be,” Johnson said.
It remains to be seen who Kaizer Chiefs will trust to change their fortunes this time around, with so much expected from them as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, the former AmaZulu and SuperSport United mentor, Johnson, presided over his second match as AmaKhosi bounced back to winning ways.
They beat a battling Cape Town Spurs 3-2 to end the three-match losing streak in a match they played at an empty FNB stadium.
For Johnson, the win is a massive boost as they prepare to face their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday, in the famed Soweto derby.
