Bonginkosi Makume has turned down an offer to join struggling DStv Premiership side Cape Town Spurs, citing relegation concerns.

The 27-year-old defender is a free agent after his contract with Maritzburg United was terminated at the end of last season.

Makume and the Pietermaritzburg side agreed to cut ties after the club’s drop. He had been in talks with Spurs for several weeks, but he has now decided to look elsewhere.

WHY DID BONGINKOSI MAKUME TURN DOWN SPURS’ OFFER?

According to sources close to the player, Makume is concerned about the stability of Spurs and the direction the club is headed in. He also worries that his reputation might be muddied if he goes down with the club.

Makume was part of the Baroka FC team that got the chop before joining Maritzburg the following season. The Team of Choice also went down with Makume on board.

“He fears for his reputation because he’s been relegated with Baroka and Maritzburg. There are signs that Spurs will be relegated, and he doesn’t want to go down that route again. So, he’s opted to stay home rather than join Spurs.”

The Cape Town-based side is yet to win a match this season after eight rounds. Shaun Bartlett, the coach who guided them to promotion, was fired a fortnight ago.

Spurs are currently at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table and are in danger of being relegated. Makume is now expected to look elsewhere, with Richards Bay reportedly interested in his services.

It is difficult to say what the future holds for Cape Town Spurs. The club is in a precarious position and will need to turn things around quickly if they want to avoid relegation. They will also need to find a long-term solution to their coaching problems.
