Veteran coach Cavin Johnson looks set to leave Motsepe Foundation Championship side NB La Masia to take up a position with a DStv Premiership side.

In the last couple of months, La Masia has tapped former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson for technical advice in preparation for the 2023/24 season.

Johnson, a highly respected figure in South African football, has provided his expertise to the Johannesburg club.

The 64-year-old coach possesses a wealth of experience, having worked at Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu FC, and Black Leopards. He was also Pitso Mosimane’s assistant at Al Ahly.

At La Masia, Johnson has provided technical advice to the coaches and players while helping them develop their game plans and strategies.

His involvement came after the club parted ways with Ashwin Sutton, now at Casric Stars. Delano Hendricks has remained as the caretaker coach at La Masia.

The club’s chairman, Nazeer Baker, said that Johnson was giving back to a club that comes from his community while weighing up his options.

WHY CAVIN JOHNSON WILL LEAVE LA MASIA

Johnson has been out of work since returning from Ahly, where he won two CAF Champions League titles with Mosimane.

SN24 can reveal that he has had conversations with La Masia, who finished 13th in their maiden season in the second tier, about possibly leaving them.

According to a club source, the veteran mentor is in talks with a PSL club to join them. Although it’s unclear which club it is and the role he would take up, the source said it was likely to happen this month.

“He’s told the club that he’s in talks with one of the DStv Premiership clubs to join them. It sounds like it’ll happen very soon from the look of things,” the source told SN24.

NB La Masia have picked up four points from their first two games. They started with a 1-0 win over Milford FC before a goalless draw against JDR.

They will be looking to improve on their maiden season performances.
