Maritzburg United defender Lungelo Bhengu has put in a transfer request to leave the Motsepe Foundation Championship side with immediate effect.
The 22-year-old has been with the Team of Choice since 2020, making over 50 appearances for the club. However, he is said to be seeking a move away in search of greener pastures.
“He has asked to be released to look for a new club. It appears he’s not happy at the club,” a source told SN24.
Lungelo Bhengu is reportedly attracting interest from several South African Premier League clubs. He is also said to be on the radar of some clubs outside the country.
Maritzburg United are said to be open to letting Bhengu go, but not without tempting him with an improved offer.
His contract with the club runs until the end of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.
BHENGU’S TRANSFER REQUEST A BLOW
Bhngu’s transfer request is a blow to Maritzburg United, who are already facing several other challenges ahead of the new season. The club have lost several key players in recent months.
Rowan Human and Wayde Jooste joined AmaZulu FC, while Karim Kimvuidi switched to Orlando Pirates. King Ndlovu joined Marumo Gallants with Genino Palace moving to Stellenbosch FC.
Whether Bhengu can find a new club before the transfer window closes remains to be seen. However, his departure would be a further setback for the club as they look to rebuild for the 2023/24 season.
