Rulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela will be reunited in the MTN8 quarterfinals on Saturday when Mamelodi Sundowns take on Moroka Swallows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Mokwena and Komphela have a long history, having worked together at Platinum Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns until recently. During their time at Downs, they won the league title twice and the MTN8 trophy once.

Both coaches are under pressure to win the MTN8 trophy, as it is a significant title that neither team has won in recent years.

MOKWENA AND KOMPHELA REUNION ON THE CARDS

“We’re facing a coach we know very well and who’s in charge of a team that is very tough to beat. They’re a strong side with good players, and we’re ready to set aside any obstacles to give our best.

“Football ultimately belongs to the players because they are on the pitch. We have to do the right things at the right time to succeed against our opponents,” said Rulani Mokwena.

The 36-year-old mentor showered praise on his charges, who have won their opening two games of the season for the first time since 2010/11.

“The team deserves significant credit for their effort so far. I’m genuinely excited by how several players have elevated their game and how seamlessly the new signings have become part of the team.

“We expect these players to continue to work as a unit, and it can only improve from here. We must keep striving to improve our performances and the results,” added the Downs mentor.

BOOTED OUT BY PIRATES

Masandawana won the Wafa Wafa Cup in 2021 but was booted out of the semi-final stage last year by Orlando Pirates. Mokwena admitted they found themselves under pressure to win every game.

The Brazilians will compete in six competitions this season, and Mokwena believes their big squad will be helpful.

Apart from facing Komphela on Saturday, Sundowns will come against former midfielder Andile Jali, who spent five years at Chloorkop.
