Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula was realistic about the challenges he would face in breaking into the Soweto giants’ first team.

Makhehleni Makhaula joined Orlando Pirates in the second half of last season from AmaZulu FC and struggled for some game time despite his reputation.

When he arrived at the club, the midfield engine was operating well, with coach Jose Riveiro opting to use his most trusted soldiers in the middle of the park.

The Soweto giants ended up winning the Nedbank Cup and MT8 title. In addition, they qualified for the CAF Champions League by finishing second in the league.

The former AmaZulu captain, Makhaula, has since revealed his expectations upon his arrival at the Sea Robbers.

MAKHAULA SAYS HE KNEW IT WOULD BE TOUGH AT PIRATES

“You can’t come to someone’s house and dish for yourself,” said Makhaula. “So you come, and there are already people doing well. I came when the team was doing well, and whatever minutes I got, I was grateful.

“The coach believed in me, and he gave me the chance to have a few starts. So I don’t see anything wrong in the six months I have been here. it has been good, and I showed the coach he can trust me.”

“I knew I had to fight for my place,” he said. “Then I got it, I grabbed it, and that is why I’m still here today.”

The 33-year-old only made 10 appearances for Pirates, mainly as a substitute.

With Pirates set for a return in the Champions League, Makhaula will be optimistic about getting more game time in the 2023/24 season.

In addition, the Soweto giants will be competing in the Carling Cup, Nedbank Cup, MTN8 and DStv Premiership.

They will open their campaign in the league against Stellenbosch FC away from home.

The encounter will be staged on Saturday, August 5, at the Danie Craven Stadium in the Western Cape.
