Ex-Kaizer Chiefs captain and defender Patrick Mabedi has revealed that he has received offers to return to South Africa’s topflight.

However, Mabedi’s heart is on the international stage with the Malawi national team.

Addressing the media in Durban, Mabedi, who is Malawi’s interim coach, stated that his future is yet to be decided, and he cannot rule out a move to SA even though he prefers Malawi.

“On that one [PSL return], we need to put it in the left side pocket because we don’t know what brings tomorrow,” said Mabedi. “There’s a couple of PSL teams that have come to me, they wanted my service. It’s difficult to say now.”

The Chiefs legend was reluctant to disclose the names of the PSL teams that approached him.

It seems Mabedi attracted interest from the PSL after leading Malawi to a top-four finish in the 2023 COSAFA Cup. In addition, he was named Coach of the Group stages in the COSAFA Cup as he guided his team to three wins in three matches, earning a spot in the semi-finals against Lesotho on Friday.

Mabedi’s troops were beaten in the semi-finals by Lesotho and lost out on securing a bronze medal to Bafana Bafana in a third-place play-off on Sunday.

And with the regional tournament now over, Mabedi, who retired from playing back in 2008 to venture into coaching, said he is weighing up his options.

“In football, things can happen in a short period of time, so I won’t be able to respond immediately, but we’ll see when the time goes,” added Mabedi.

“I don’t know what the FA is thinking, and I don’t know what other teams are thinking. So, we just need to wait and see.”

Patrick Mabedi has had stints at different clubs in the PSL. He served as the assistant coach at Chiefs and Moroka Swallows.

He was a mainstay in the Amakhosi team during the late 1990s and early 2000s, playing in over 200 games, and winning a number of titles, including the Premiership title.
