Lyle Lakay has confirmed that he is still contracted to Mamelodi Sundowns despite being left out in the cold as the club prepares for the new season.

The 31-year-old left-back was loaned out to Cape Town City last season, and he is set to report back to the Sundowns camp after the 2023 COSAFA Cup in KwaZulu-Natal.

Lakay is the captain of the Bafana COSAFA Cup team, made up of fringe players and the left-back has led the national team to back-to-back wins against Namibia and Botswana.

Lakay, who is enjoying his time at national level has admitted that his future at Sundowns is bleak as he knows that he is not part of the club’s plans going forward.

The player’s loan move was a shock to many as he had a successful 2021/22 season where he won the Defender of the Season accolade. He had featured in six league games last campaign before his loan to CT City, where he had a good season.

The ex-Bloemfontein Celtic played in 26 matches for the Citizens last season across all competitions and helped them finish fourth place on the DStv premiership standings.

LAKAY IN THE COLD WITH SUNDOWNS

“At the moment, I’m still contracted to Sundowns. I have seen rumours that I’m a free agent, but I’m not,” said Lakay.

“Even though I’m not in their plans, I’m still contracted. I still have to report back, I still have to respect the club and I will have to wait for them to let me know what is happening.”

“I was told I’m not a part of the plans but they still have to decide because I’m contracted to them (Sundown),” he added.

Lyle Lakay also went on to reveal that Mamelodi Sundowns will decide his future, while stating that a move back to CT City is not entirely off the table.

“That’s not in the plans at the moment (going to City) but also Sundowns gets to decide what happens next. I’m not ruling out anything but they (Sundowns) have to decide because the ball is in their court.”
