Jermaine Seoposenwe is poised to become the 10th member of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana to reach the 100-cap mark when they face Tanzania on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024.

The Mexico-based forward will join an elite group of South African women’s footballers who have achieved this milestone since the team’s inception in 1993.

Retired defender Janine van Wyk currently holds the record for most appearances for both the men’s and women’s national teams on the African continent with 185 caps. She achieved this feat in December 2023 against Burkina Faso, the same day she announced her retirement from international football.

Noko Matlou (172 caps), Nompumelelo Nyandeni (149 caps), and Refiloe Jane (134 caps) follow van Wyk on the list. Other notable names include Nothando Vilakazi (137 caps), Portia Modise (124 caps), Mamello Makhabane (121 caps), Amanda Dlamini (105 caps), Leandra Smeda (100 caps), and Lebohang Ramalepe (97 caps).

JERMAINE SEOPOSENWE ON TARGET IN OLYMPIC QUALIFIER

Seoposenwe, who turns out for Liga MX Femenil club Monterrey, was on target in South Africa’s commanding 3-0 victory over Tanzania in the first leg of their CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier.

The match, played at the Azam Complex Stadium on Friday, saw Banyana overcome an initial struggle to find their rhythm.

The 30-year-old opened the scoring for Banyana in the 10th minute, with Thembi Kgatlana and Hildah Magaia adding the other two goals in the second half. She will be expected to spearhead Banyana’s attack on Tuesday at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

The second leg encounter kicks off at 7:30 PM and will be broadcasted live on SuperSport Variety 4.

If they overcome Tanzania, they’ll face a tougher test in the final qualifying round in April. Their opponent will be either Cameroon or Nigeria, the winner of their ongoing close battle. Only the victor of this two-legged tie will earn a spot as one of Africa’s two representatives at the Paris Games this summer.

Nigeria and Cameroon, two powerhouses from West Africa, drew 0-0 in the first leg of their Olympic qualifier on Friday in Douala. The return leg will be played in Abuja on Monday.
