Stellenbosch FC accounted for their first title in the PSL after defeating TS Galaxy 5-4 on penalties to claim the coveted Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday afternoon.
The match had ended 1-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium after extra time. They won the match despite being one man down, accounting for their first trophy since gaining promotion into the DStv Premiership in 2019.
TS Galaxy, however, appeared to have the upper hand considering their experience of being in a cup final.Â
Stellenbosch FC finished the match one man down after Fawaaz Basadien was red-carded after he seemed to have insulted Lehlohonolo Mojela.
And Stellies went on to proudly claim a 5-4 win on penalties to win their coveted trophy.
HOW THE TWO SIDES BATTLED IN THE CKO FINAL
Steve Barker came into this one, hoping to avoid a repeat 2009 when he lost in the Nedbank final to Moroka Swallows, albeit as the University of Pretoria head coach.
The match proved not to be an easy walk in the park, as both sides were slow to move out of their blocks while relying on counters.Â

And it was Mojela who drew first blood for TS Galaxy on the stroke of half-time. However, Stellies did not give up as they restored parity through Ismaël Olivier Toure after 74 minutes.
The match was forced into extra time as the two sides could not be separated at normal time.
