Cape Town City’s sought-after striker Khanyisa Mayo is reportedly being closely monitored by Mamelodi Sundowns, according to sources close to the club.

The Tshwane giants have been tracking the 25-year-old for some time, although their interest waned in the previous transfer window.

Sundowns initially planned to swap Mayo with Thabiso Kutumela when the former Orlando Pirates striker moved to Cape Town City. However, City extended Mayo’s contract until June 2028, putting a potential move on hold.

An SN24 source close to Cape Town City confirmed that Sundowns have renewed their interest in Mayo, with a view to strengthening their squad in the near future.

The Bafana Bafana forward has scored seven goals in nine DStv Premiership matches.

IS MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ RENEWED INTEREST IN KHANYISA MAYO REAL?

“The interest from Sundowns is real,” the source said. “They are expected to start discussions with City soon, and City might be tempted to listen to their offers if the price is right.”

The source added that Mayo is “fully focused on doing the job for City” but is aware of the interest in him. “He knows what’s happening and is a professional,” the source said. “Sundowns and City have a good relationship, so anything is possible, but it will ultimately come down to the money.”

Sundowns have been plagued by injuries lately, particularly in attack where Peter Shalulile, Abubeker Nasir and Lucas Ribeiro spent time on the sidelines. The defending champions are reportedly looking to add a quality striker to their squad, with Mayo seen as a potential target.

With Gift Motupa and Kutumela expected to depart the club, Sundowns are keen to bolster their attacking options. Mayo, who was the joint top scorer in the PSL last season with 12 goals, fits the bill.

However, Cape Town City have been reluctant to listen to offers for Mayo in the past, but Sundowns are reportedly confident they can convince the club to part ways with the striker.
