Veteran South African coach Gavin Hunt has expressed his interest in coaching the national team, Bafana Bafana.

He revealed that he has already had three interviews for the position but was disappointed with the lack of focus on footballing matters.

During those interviews, Hunt is shocked that there was no interest in how he intended to get the team playing.

“Definitely [I would coach Bafana Bafana],” Hunt told Peter du Toit on This Is Football. “I’ve had three interviews, and the questions were: how are you going to handle agents? How are you going to handle the media? Not even one question about how we would play? It baffled me.”

Hunt, who has won three league titles with SuperSport United, believes that the national team needs a coach who can build a strong playing style and select the best players available.

He picks the late Clive Barker as the greatest Bafana coach ever. Barker led Bafana Bafana to their first and only Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996. He is widely considered one of the best coaches in South African history.

WHAT GAVIN HUNT THINKS ABOUT THE BAFANA BAFANA JOB

“Listen, the greatest coach we had was Clive Barker,” Hunt said. “He knew how to put a team together, and the most important thing for the national team is to know how to put a team together. You’re a selector. You’re not a coach.”

Hunt’s comments come just a few weeks after he met with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. Broos is preparing Bafana for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in January, the competition will be hosted in Ivory Coast.

Hunt believes the Belgian is on the right track and understands what it takes to succeed with a national team.

Meanwhile, Hunt will guide his club SuperSport United, against Algeria’s USM Alger of Algeria in the CAF Confederation Cup. USM are the competition’s defending champions. The two sides clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.  SuperSport lost their first group stages game against Modern Future of Egypt last week.
