Pirates in slump? Jose Riveiro remains calm amidst goal drought

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has dismissed any suggestion that the Soweto giants are in crisis despite their recent goal drought.

The Buccaneers attackers have seemingly lost their goal-scoring boots after a decent start to the season, with Zakhele Lepasa netting goals for fun.

They have only scored four goals in their last seven matches in all competitions, failing to find the back of the net more than once.

However, Jose Riveiro remains unfazed and is confident that his troops will soon rediscover their goalscoring touch.

RIVEIRO UNFAZED AMIDST SCORING WOES

“They (players) did a fantastic job to be proud of the level of professionalism. The way they approached the FIFA break, the way we trained in the week,” said Riveiro.

‘But in the end, you guys like to analyse the results. You don’t like to analyse the games. We drew, and we had problems scoring. We scored three, so we are in a good moment. We concede three goals. We are not defending well. It’s so simplistic.

“We are doing great things, but the ball hits the post. The ball touches the keeper; he doesn’t know how, but the ball touches him, touches the post, and now we say, and you say we are in crisis. The performance was more than 0-0,” added the Pirates coach.

In their most recent game at the weekend, Pirates played out to their fourth draw of the season, Richards Bay, in the DStv Premiership.

The disappointing goalless stalemate also saw Pirates’ two-match winning streak end as they beat Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs before the international break.

After 11 games in the league, they sit outside the top eight in the log standings with 16 points from four wins and three defeats. Pirates are nine points behind leaders Cape Town City FC with two games in hand.

In those 11 matches, Orlando Pirates scored 11 goals while conceding eight. But Riveiro said he will not go into a state of panic.
