Moroka Swallows goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has shed light on the pressure that comes with donning the Gold and Black jersey of Kaizer Chiefs.

Akpeyi stated that some players may struggle to cope with the demanding expectations of the Soweto giants.

Having spent a few years at Naturena before leaving the club in 2022 to join Swallows, Akpeyi is well-versed in the unique challenges faced by players at Amakhosi, which is one of South Africa’s most prominent football clubs.

The Nigerian international goal featured 69 times in three-and-a half-years at Chiefs, experiencing the highs and lows of being adored by supporters and facing their wrath due to inconsistent performances.

Akpeyi acknowledged the demanding nature of playing for Chiefs, highlighting the impact it can have on players’ mental well-being.

“Players are different but from a few of them that I’ve come across, the pressure sometimes that comes with playing for the institution of Chiefs’ calibre might be overwhelming to some of them,” said Akpeyi.

“You always get excited when signing for Kaizer Chiefs but when you have to face the pressure that comes with it is difficult, playing in front of large crowds and just having the ability to come out and do well even when there is pressure, is a different story altogether.”

The 37-year-old was addressing the media during Swallows’ media open day at Sturrock Park in Milpark on Thursday.

Akpeyi and The Dube Birds are set to host Chiefs in a Soweto Derby DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon at the Dobsonville Stadium.

The Swallows goalie went on to warn his teammates not to underestimate Chiefs, despite their recent struggles.

“Playing a team that is struggling is difficult. It’s not going to be easy because they are looking for points and we are looking forward to sustaining our position on the log,” he added.

“It’s going to be difficult on Sunday because it’s a case of two lions fighting. At the end of the day, we are ready and prepared for what is coming. The team has a huge fan base and it matters if you will be able to stand when things don’t go well.”
