Kaizer Chiefs legend William Shongwe has offered insights into the club’s recent coaching woes, highlighting management’s challenges and complexities in making these difficult decisions.
Shongwe, who holds immense respect and admiration among the Amakhosi faithful, believes that the coaching merry-go-round at Naturena stems from a combination of factors.
Those factors include the immense pressure to deliver success, the demanding expectations of the supporters, and the intricate dynamics within the club’s structure.

“I understand the pressure the supporters are under,” he said. “It’s been eight long years of drought, and it’s not typical for Kaizer Chiefs. All that is understandable.
“But in this football scenario, there’s a cycle. At country level as well, there are cycles whereby the most prominent football nations will go down, and it will take them time before they rise. It is the same with clubs as well.
“Yes, the Chiefs one is a bit extended now. In the past, ‘Bra K’ [Dr Kaizer Motaung] has done well in that aspect whereby he takes his time [before making coaching changes].”

He added it was not Kaizer Chiefs’ culture to change coaches constantly, but the issue was now the safety of coaches.
“But the way things happened, it boils down to how safe are the coaches. Some of these decisions are based on the safety of coaches.”
“For the big team they are, it’s not in their DNA to keep changing coaches. I don’t think the decisions they made were management. It was for safety; you’ve got to take that into account. It’s not a good thing to be changing coaches now and then.
William Shongwe pointed out that Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns “didn’t start like a house on fire” in 2012. “He struggled a bit; it took him some time before he got it together. When he got it together, it was one way. Alex Ferguson – the same happened.”
