Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker says his growth as a coach is a perfect example that one does not need a successful playing career to be a highly ranked PSL coach.
Steve Barker spoke on the sidelines of the ongoing classes of the highly-rated CAF A License Coaching diploma.
The seven day course, which runs until the 20th of November, attracted a total of 25 participants eager to attain the highest CAF coaching badge.
And Barker who has emerged as one of the most shrewd PSL coaches has had his say on what can make top level coach.
Barker is of the view that a successful playing career does not transcend into a successful coaching career.
BARKER TEN YEAR-LONG CAREER
The Stellenbosch FC mentor had a ten yearlong playing career where he played for two teams, Wits University and SuperSport United.”The theory and practical are two separate things. You can’t have one without the other, it’s part of the job as a coach to educate the people you train, in terms of the ability to transfer knowledge and the ability to assess the type of players.

“You don’t have to be a player that had a sterling career, whether cut short by injury or whether you just want to educate and develop footballers. That I think is a space for everyone,” Barker said.
The course is set to end on the 20th of November. A number of highly rated football figures that include Jabulani Mendu and Monde Hlatshwayo have also graced the coaching course.
This CAF A license course returned to South Africa after a six-year haitus, as SAFA had been unable to issue the CAF A and B coaching licenses since 2017.
CAF had placed a freeze on the coaching licenses while they were updated the coaching manuals.
