Former Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp was spotted at Sekhukhune United’s game against Orlando Pirates, sparking rumours that he could be in line for a return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Middendorp was reportedly seen observing Sekhukhune United’s playing patterns on Tuesday, and his presence has fuelled speculation about his possible appointment as the club’s new head coach.

The German coach has been without a club since parting ways with Tanzania’s Singida Fountain Gate two months ago. However, he is no stranger to the PSL, having previously coached Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic, Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs.

Sekhukhune United is currently in 13th place in the PSL standings, and the club’s management is looking for a new coach to replace Brandon Truter, who was sacked this week.

WHY SEKHUKHUNE UNITED ARE CONSIDERING ERNST MIDDENDORP

Middendorp is a proven coach in the PSL, and he has a reputation for getting the best out of his players. He could be a good fit for Sekhukhune United, and his appointment could help the club move up the table in the second half of the season.

He has previously saved Maritzburg from relegation, and Babina Noko’s management would be looking for someone who can guide them to safety.

However, the club is reportedly still in the process of interviewing other candidates, and an announcement is expected to be made in the coming days.

They have been linked with several other coaches from overseas. Jwaneng Galaxy coach Morena Ramoreboli is one of those linked with the job.

Ramoreboli recently won the Botswana Premier League title in the neighbouring country. He has also guided the miners to the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

For that particular feat, they eliminated Orlando Pirates to progress to the money-spinning stage of Africa’s premier club competition. It remains to be seen whether he would be open to switching from the Botswana side.

Interestingly, Sekhukhune are still involved in the CAF competition.
