DStv Premiership side Chippa United have joined the race for Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro, who is on loan at SuperSport United.

SuperSport United had initiated talks to sign the striker permanently beyond his loan deal. However, SN24 sources close to the player have now indicated that the Chilli Boys have joined the race to sign him at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. The Nigerian talisman is believed to be on the list of Chippa United’s wanted players.

Since signing for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 from Abuja College of Nigeria, Ighodaro has yet to play an official game for the DStv Premiership defending champions, as he has been sent out on loan on three occasions.

In the first year, he was on loan at the Motsepe Foundation Championship side University of Pretoria, before turning up for Chippa United last season. Now, he is at Matsatsantsa A Pitori.

“He’s a wanted man; he is on demand; there are several teams both in South Africa and outside, including Egypt, Angola and Tanzania, who have been an inquiry about him,” the source said.

IGHODARO’S SUNDOWNS CONTRACT

The source added that his contract with the Brazilians ends on June 30 next year, when his SuperSport United loan deal expires.

Last season, while on loan at Chippa United, he scored 10 goals in the league. He was just two short of the top goal scorers, Peter Shalulile and Khanyisa Mayo of Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City, respectively.

Overall, the 24-year-old forward scored 11 goals in 27 matches in all competitions.

In the Motsepe Foundation Championship, while on loan at AmaTuks, he scored four league goals in 18 games and managed to attract interest from Partizan Belgrade.

With both sides keen on the player’s services, it remains to be seen whether Sundowns are open to parting ways with the player come the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Another issue disadvantaging Ighodaro at the Tshwane-based outfit is foreign quota. Sundowns have Brazilian winger Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Argentinian midfielder Junior Mendieta as new foreign additions. At the same time, they ended last season with Marcelo Allende, Erwin Saavedra, Abdelmounaim Boutouil and Abubaker Ahmed Nassir.

Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro has made ten appearances, scoring two goals for SuperSport United in all competitions this season.
