Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has urged the PSL to make the R100, 000 prize money standard as it would be beneficial to the players.

Truter, who has praised the sponsors of the Carling Knockout Cup for the R100 000 prize money argued that football is short career therefore the inventive will go a long way in ensuring players don’t struggle after their playing days.

The PSL should increase the prize money for player of the match to match other sporting codes, such as rugby and cricket, where players typically earn R50,000 to R80,000

Eight players won the R100k Man of the Match award, voted by the fans, in the Carling Knockout Cup Last 16.

Jammie Webber of Sekhukhune was the fans’ MoM as Truter’s side beat Royal AM 1-0 at Peter Mokaba stadium on Saturday to book a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face TS Galaxy.

“You know what people don’t know is that Carling Cup with the other sponsor the Castle Lager is sponsoring rugby R80k, R50k for man of the match in rugby matches every week,” said Truter.

“So this is something new for football and I think it’s about time that the sponsors put this kind of money for our boys in terms of having a short career and taking it match in match out and putting your livelihood on the line. “I don’t see anything wrong with it, yes it’s motivating for them extra incentive but if rugby is doing it on a weekly basis. What’s R5000 for man of the match on a weekly basis compared to rugby?

“So thank you to Carling Cup for minimizing that gap and hopefully it will stay that way. In the near future in the league as well.” The seven other players who walked away with the MoM accolade at the weekend include Keagan Dolly of Kaizer Chiefsz Iqraam Rayners of Stellenbosch FC. Andile Jali of Moroka Swallows, Ndumiso Mabena of Polokwane City. Orlando Pirates talisman Thembinkosi Lorch and Khanyisa Mayo of Cape Town City. TS Galaxy captain Mlungisi Mbunjana, who was the first player to take home R100 000.
