Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena says fans have let them down as they did battle on the continent.
The 2022/23 Footballer of the Season said opposition fans sing throughout the match when they travel for continental competitions.
“Last year, when we played Wydad, the fans let us down. They couldn’t sing the whole game,” Mokoena said.
“For us, when we play away, we can’t even hear our voices because the fans are singing the whole game. They’re booing us. Whereas when they come here at home, our fans are just quiet. That is what is letting us down as South Africans,” he explained.
He called on the club’s fans to rally behind the team when they play Angola’s Petro de Luanda on Tuesday.
Sundowns carry a 2-0 from the first leg on Saturday in Luanda. They host the Girabola giants at Loftus Versveld Stadium on Tuesday evening in the reverse fixture.
THE PROMISE MOKOENA MADE
He also revealed the promise he made when he joined the club last year in January.
Mamelodi Sundowns signed Mokoena from SuperSport United in January 2022, and he quickly established himself as a vital cog in midfield.

He played a crucial role in Sundowns’ success last season, as they won the DStv Premiership title and reached the semi-final of the CAF Champions League.
Mokoena has continued to impress in the current season and is one of the main reasons why Sundowns are currently top of the DStv Premiership table.
“I’m enjoying my football [at Sundowns]. It’s been tough. It’ll always be tough because the competition is very tough. That is what is making us always improve and keep on winning… You want to get better every time, and I’m not as happy as yet because when I signed, I promised the chairman that we would win the Champions League. So, we’re still working on it.”
