Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki praised Edson Castillo’s call-up to the Venezuela national team, saying he would have liked to see him start a match for his country.

Castillo joined Chiefs at the start of the 2023/24 season on a two-year deal from Monagas SC and has become a standout performer for Amakhosi.

The 29-year-old midfielder has featured in 12 matches for Amakhosi in all competitions and scored four goals. He is one of the eight players Chiefs signed with Given Msimango, Thatoyaone Ditlhokwe, Mduduzi Mdantsane, Pule Mmodi, Tebogo Potsane, and Jasond Gonzalez.

Ntseki has suggested it would have been great for Chiefs if Castilo played in the national team.

“I think the first thing is for us to congratulate him for being in the national team,” Ntseki said.

“Every player wants to play for his national team, and I think it’s a big achievement for him to be recognised.

“To be selected for the national team, playing for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa, was good.

“He went through the training and the preparation with the team even though he didn’t play. But I would have been much happier if he were to play for his national team.

“I know the type of player that he is. He would have loved to play. So it’s not good for us that he didn’t play. But it’s also good that he was on the national team.”

Kaizer Chiefs will welcome AmaZulu FC in the Carling Knockout Cup at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 21 October. Kickoff is at 18:00.
